Cappadocia is the ancient and modern name of a remarkable region in Central Anatolia. The name of Cappadocia is believed to come from the Persian language (Catpa-tuka: The land of beautiful horses). When the volcanoes in the region were active millions of years ago, the lava which poured out covered all previously formed hills and valleys, forming a high plateau. This newly formed plateau consists mainly of tuff (soft rock) and some rare layers of basalt (hard rock). The destruction of the tuff and the basalt layers by erosion (heavy rains and melting snow) and sharp temperature changes has continued for thousands of years and is still in process today.

On the banks of the Red River, it is famous for its pottery and painted tiles of Turkey. You can see pottery being made, including the old techniques, and even try your hand on the potter's wheel.
